Fasting - The Forgotten Discipline
Search "fasting" on YouTube and you'll find doctors, biohackers, and wellness experts. What you won't find much of is the church. In this message from the Sermon on the Mount series, Pastor Justin Sturgeon takes on Matthew 6:16-18 and asks why one of the three core practices Jesus assumed his followers would do, alongside giving and prayer, has nearly disappeared from Western Christianity. Tracing fasting from its roots in the Torah through the devout practice of Jesus' own day and into the early church, Pastor Justin unpacks five biblical reasons to fast, drawn from Scripture and the work of John Mark Comer, and challenges the modern assumption that fasting is mainly a tool for getting an answer from God. At the center of the message is a promise Jesus never fully explains: the Father who sees in secret will reward what no one else sees. This message from First Christian Church of The Dalles offers a practical, honest introduction to a practice many believers have never been taught.
