A Different Kind of Resistance
"Turn the other cheek" is one of the most quoted — and often most misunderstood — commands Jesus ever gave. In week eight of the Sermon on the Mount series, Pastor Justin Sturgeon takes on Matthew 5:38–42 and makes the case that Jesus wasn't calling his followers to be passive. He was calling them to something far more demanding. Working through the ancient principle of "eye for eye" and the three vivid examples Jesus gives — the backhanded slap, the lawsuit over a shirt, the forced march — Pastor Justin shows how each one is a specific act of courageous, costly resistance that refuses to play by the aggressor's rules. Drawing on the Civil Rights Movement and the training that prepared marchers to absorb violence without retaliating, this message at First Christian Church of The Dalles challenges every follower of Jesus to ask: what kind of person do I need to become to live this way? Because the Third Way Jesus describes isn't a rule to follow in the moment. It's a character to build before the moment arrives.
