Nobody stands at a fork in the road and deliberately chooses ruin. In week seventeen of the Sermon on the Mount series, Pastor Justin Sturgeon walks through Matthew 7:13-14, where Jesus stops describing the kingdom and tells the crowd to choose. This message at First Christian Church of The Dalles takes on a passage usually preached as a headcount of who makes it to heaven, and shows that Jesus is doing something else entirely. Pastor Justin traces the two roads back to Moses, setting life and death before Israel and pleading with them to choose life. He unpacks why the word behind narrow does not mean restricted or narrow-minded but pressed and afflicted, and why the road is hard because of what is on it. The broad road is not the road of obvious wickedness. It is wide, crowded, reasonable, and it is where you are by default. Jesus is not taking a census.
