The Heart of the Matter

In week five of First Christian Church's journey through the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Justin Sturgeon opens Matthew 5:27–30 and confronts what Jesus actually says about lust. Sharing openly from his own years of struggle, Justin shows why willpower alone never delivers lasting change — and why Jesus isn't offering behavior modification but heart transformation. This message distinguishes between guilt (which leads us toward Christ) and shame (the enemy's lie about identity), unpacks the Greek nuance behind "looking lustfully," and recovers a high biblical view of sex as sacred — a window into the image of God we bear together as men and women. Pastor Justin also speaks directly to the women in the room about dignity, refusing the old script that placed the burden of male lust on female modesty. And he offers three practical handles for the fight: making a covenant with your eyes, cultivating habits as means of grace, and pursuing the kind of vulnerable community where, as James writes, we confess our sins to one another and find healing. Whether you've been in this battle for years or are just beginning to ask what Jesus actually wants from you, this sermon is an invitation to let him as far in as he is willing to go.
