What God Joined
Most of us read the Bible's teaching on divorce with a knot in our stomach, bracing for the verdict. In week six of First Christian Church's journey through the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Justin Sturgeon shows that the verdict isn't what we think it is — and that the Jesus who speaks in Matthew 5:31–32 is the same Jesus who meets the woman at the well in John 4. Divorce has touched almost everyone — your marriage, your parents', your kids, or maybe a marriage you're sitting in right now where this topic feels raw. This sermon is for you. Pastor Justin walks past the usual debate about when divorce is permissible and goes after the better question: what is marriage actually for? Once you see that, what Jesus does next is surprising. You'll hear why the woman at the well almost certainly wasn't the moral failure we've made her out to be, why Jesus places the moral weight in a very different place than most pulpits do, and what real grace looks like for anyone carrying the weight of a divorce — biblical or not. Whether you've been the one who left, the one who was left, or someone trying to honor God in the marriage you're in now, this is an invitation to hear from a Jesus who consistently stands with the powerless.
